„Design and sustainability
The first bicycles are made of wood. In 1817, Karl Drais covered a distance of 13 kilometers with his walking bicycle.
A wooden bicycle from 1818 was recently found in a depot in Franeker!
In the same Franeker, architect Kurt Boomgaard has combined two passions, the passion for cycling and the passion for wood. This resulted in various test models of wooden bicycles. Functionality, usability and beauty come together in design. Wood has great properties to make a bike ride enjoyable. The naturally present properties have been translated into a design that makes use of those properties. The intention was therefore not to copy an existing design, but to use the characteristic properties of the wood with a new design to make riding this bicycle more pleasant and an exciting experience.“
